What exactly is “ASK EXPERTS”? For readers who are unfamiliar with the Ask Experts session, it is a regular session held every 12.30 p.m. as a “mind” meal for all during Ramadan.
This session is one of the “Knowledge Transfer Program” mediums through which various areas of expertise and universities will share knowledge with the outside world in general and Master PhD students in particular on a topic discussed.
Back in the slot with another outstanding expert, Prof Ir. Dr Choong Kok Keong is currently a Prof of Structural Engineering from The School of Civil Engineering at Nibong Tebal. He was the Thesis Supervisors for Dr Ashikin Marzuki during her PhD journey, the one who prepared her for her Prestige Viva Presentation and helped her ace all the questions with ease. Since 2016, I have been a certified Professional Engineer and have been registered with the Malaysian Board of Engineers.
His vast expertise is in material strengths, theory of engagement structure, and design of archistructure stability of structure studies. Former Dean of Civil Engineering for Postgraduates, Undergraduates, and Degree Students One truly impressive portfolio for a person to describe, and this is what makes Dr Ashikin Marzuki highly inspired by him and his work, for which he will be grateful until now.
What are Shell & Spatial Structures?
Shell or Special structures are based on the shape and the monuments for each of them, each building made depends on the functions and the weight to obtain once it is built.
Here are the examples of the Shell & Partial Structures
– Space Frame Structure
– Membrane Structure
– Tensegrity Structure
– Cable Dome Structure
– Hybrid Cable and Membrane Structure

To stabilize the form of the curves, the design with curvature must have the appropriate number of curves, elements, and lightweight materials. Use in addition to the structure with sections and with a stable shape. The partial means that the arrangements of the parts of the building (members) must be transferred through the pressure cope materials in order to distribute the load to all parts of the sections of the building in order to make it more stable and less pressured.
The advantage of using this kind of structure in building making.
– Use less materials meaning less overall self width and the foundation of the structure will be less bulky
– Save up the foundation of the structure
– Make the structure easy to manage and lightweight
– Easy to use machinery to lifting the structure or to destructive it easier without fatal damages
What software that engineers always use to design the structures to help designing the perfect structure?
– Any software with 3D Structures view will do as good as any advance of normal designing softwares
– For the membrane structure the company will usually come up with an advance and special software to get the perfect calculations and well sketch structure
Prof Choong Advice For Postgraduates
Just believe in everything that you do, keep yourself motivated and take every shot possible to end it well, learn to strive as much as possible overseas and travel expanding your ways of thinking. This will bring uniqueness to your research and thesis writing.
